Darwin Rittgers knows what it feels like to have hope.

What it feels like to see hope fade away.

What it feels like to be almost there.

Almost there, but not quite.

For two and a half years, the former Waverly policeman has been suspended in a state of endless anticipation.

He needed a kidney and was registered with the Iowa Donor Network.

But finding just the right match for a transplant seemed to be a challenge tougher than anything else he had ever encountered.

When Darwin first found out his kidneys had given up, 12 of his friends volunteered to get tested to see if they would be a good fit.

No one was.

“Even though they didn’t qualify, it’s a blessing that they considered doing this for me,” Darwin says.

In the meantime, Carolyn, his wife, had offered to share one of her kidneys. And it seemed almost the perfect match.

All of her tests appeared to be going smoothly, and the two were holding their breath that Carolyn could give her husband what no one else could.

But just before the final test, their hopes were thwarted once again. Carolyn was a match, but for that one tenth of one percent of one final test.

It was a no go.

A couple of times since, the phone rang at the Rittgers household in Waverly with news that there might be a potential donor. But for whatever reason, that always came with the stipulation that there were other people on the waiting list before Darwin.
